Gala celebrates Canada’s best songwriters

TORONTO — After an appropriate big-band rock serenade, co-host and CBC radio host Jian Ghomeshi welcomed, “Music lovers, the well-dressed, the indie punks,” to Saturday night’s 7th annual Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame Gala.

Prolific The Band guitarist Robbie Robertson was among 13 English and francophone inductees and songs honoured at the gala, which took place at the Toronto Centre for the Arts. The live and colourful backdrop was ideal for performance and video tributes.

French-Canadian composer Romeo Beaudry was the first inductee honoured, followed by popular East Coast musician John Stromberg (Kiss me, Honey, Do) and Pierre Letourneau, who gave a heartfelt acceptance speech. In between were energetic performances of inducted song Squid Jiggin’ ground and Pierre Lapointe’s Letourneau tribute, La Chanson des Pissenlits.

Rock ’n’ roll innovator Jack Scott was honoured with country crooner Russel deCarle’s performance of What in the World’s Come Over You. “Of all the years I’ve travelled around and done this,” Scott said in his acceptance speech, “this night makes up for it all, it really does.”

Antoine Gratton’s performance of the inducted Gilles Valiquette French-Canadian hit Je suis Cool brought some life back onto the stage and into the audience.


Ghomeshi described the final three modern-era songs being inducted as, “A hippy anthem, a soulful pop classical, and one of the most popular songs in the history of Canadian and pop music.” Toronto native Divine Brown performed a powerful rendition of Wildflower, followed by Francine Raymond’s soulful performance of When I Die, and Canadian rock band Crowbar’s epic, upbeat performance of the hippy classic Oh what a feeling, eliciting a standing ovation.


But the gala was indisputably a grandiose tribute to French-Canadian lyricist Luc Plamondon, and Canadian rock legend Robbie Robertson.

Plamondon has written music for such notable Quebecois acts as Celine Dion, Bruno Pelletier, and wrote the lyrics for the French/Quebecois rock opera Starmania. French-Canadian artists Eric Lapointe, Sebastien Plante, Brigitte Boisjoli and Coral Egan performed moving renditions of hits like Le Monde est Stone, Oxygene and L’amour Esite Encore.


“It seems like every time I come to Toronto I receive an award,” joked Plamondon, who has received almost every conceivable Canadian music award. His genuine, heartfelt acceptance speech expressed appreciation of his success in Canada . . . despite, he recalled, so many English Canadians not knowing who he was.


Legendary Canadian musician and lyricist Robertson’s video and testimonial introduction reaffirm his encapsulation of timeless rock ’n’ roll soul. Along with the Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame, Robertson is also a member of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and the Canadian Music Hall of fame.

His musical tribute was kicked off with Tom Wilson & Colin Linden’s performance of Robertson’s hit, The Weight, then followed by Moon Struck One, performed by Daniel Lanois, and Halifax indie-rock band Wintersleep’s rendition of Broken Arrow.


Each artist was able to capture the melodic intimacy of Robertson’s timeless music.

“I was vacant, Julie was a bird with a broken wing / We were always afraid, what tomorrow might bring,” sang Lanois in Moon Struck One.


Canadian musician Sylvia Tyson introduced Robertson. “Song writing is really a mysterious thing,” he said in his acceptance speech. “It’s remarkable at this stage that I have no understanding of it, but I love it . . . it’s this magical creative thing.”

The 7th annual CSHF gala will be aired on CBC Radio 2 on Thursday, April 7 from 6-8 p.m. Eastern time, with highlights on Espace Musique at 4 p.m. It will also be broadcast on CBC Radio One on April 8 at 2:05 p.m. (Part 1) and April 15 at 2:05 p.m. (Part 2).

Robertson, Plamondon inducted into Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame

TORONTO - Robbie Robertson and Luc Plamondon were ushered into the Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame on Saturday, and it wasn't the first time they accomplished something significant together.

Back in the mid-70s, Plamondon was among a group of Quebec musicians who were crashing at Robertson's place in California. They were acquaintances of Robertson's wife, Dominique.

The timing was perfect. Robertson — then the guitarist and primary songwriter for the Band — was in the process of crafting a semi-true tune about the rocky history of Acadia called "Acadian Driftwood," and he had his mind set on a French-language outro to the folky song.

Plamondon and his friends were more than happy to help, and the ensuing tune has become one of the Band's best-loved songs.

"They helped me figure a lyric thing there that would work for that," Robertson recalled in his dressing room prior to the ceremony.

"He's a great guy. And he is the premier French-Canadian lyricist. He has been for many, many years."

Robertson and Plamondon were honoured alongside Canadian songwriters Pierre Letourneau, Romeo Beaudry, John Stromberg and Jack Scott — a Windsor, Ont., native who began penning hits in the late '50s and whose "The Way I Walk" was included in Oliver Stone's infamous film, "Natural Born Killers."

"What a movie that was — I didn't know what to make of that, I really didn't," the 75-year-old Scott said as he climbed the stage to offer his thanks.

"God bless you all, and God bless Canada!"

The 69-year-old Plamondon, meanwhile, has penned songs for Celine Dion, Robert Charlebois, Bruno Pelletier, Garou and Diane Dufresne (one of Plamondon's most frequent collaborators, for whom he wrote nearly 75 tunes), and has co-authored musicals including "Starmania" and "Notre-Dame de Paris," which has been performed in Canada, France, Russia, Switzerland, Spain, China and South Korea.

Dion recorded a tribute album to Plamondon in 1991 that went double platinum in Quebec and moved a million copies in France.

"The Pantheon in Paris is where they put the dead writers — so I'm glad in Toronto, I could get in alive," joked Plamondon, who was born in Saint-Raymond, Que.

"Every time I come to Toronto, I receive an award."

In addition to "Acadian Driftwood," Robertson is known for penning such classics as "The Weight" and "Broken Arrow."

But the 67-year-old says he's most thankful not for his past accomplishments, but for the fact that he hasn't lost the songwriting gift.

"There's a lot of people from my generation that can't write songs anymore," he said matter-of-factly earlier this week.

"The fact that I can — and that I feel like I'm still writing some of the best songs I've ever written in my life — I'm really grateful for that because I look around and I think: 'Whoa. I hope I don't get any of THAT on me.'"

But he acknowledges that songwriting has never been easy for him.

"You pull your hair out, you try to trick yourself into it. It is the creative thing that we have no control over, and we think we do."

Also at Saturday's gala, Canadian folklorists Edith Fowke and Helen Creighton were honoured with the Frank Davies Legacy Award while music impresario Yvan Dufresne — credited with discovering Michael Louvain, Pierre Lalonde and Ginette Reno — received the Canadian Music Publishers Association Legacy Award.

The hall also celebrated a lengthy list of songs: "Votre avion va-t-il au paradis?" by Beaudry; "Squid Jiggin' Ground" by Arthur Scammell; "La chanson des pissenlits" by Letourneau; "My Heart Cries for You" by Percy Faith/Carl Sigman; "Je suis cool" by Gilles Valiquette; "Pas besoin de frapper pour entrer" by Jacques Michel; "Oh What a Feeling" by Crowbar (Kelly Jay/Roly Greenway) and "When I Die" by Motherlode (Willie Smith/Steve Kennedy).

The 1973 tune "Wildflower" — originally penned by B.C. band Skylark, which featured a young David Foster — was also ushered into the hall on Saturday.

It's a song that has found new life over the years.

The track has been covered by Color Me Badd, Johnny Mathis, Gary Morris, New Birth, and Hank Crawford, whose version has become an extremely popular sample used by hip-hop stars including Eminem, Drake, Lil Wayne, Kanye West, Jamie Foxx and the late Tupac Shakur.

The gala featured performances by Halifax indie-rock outfit Wintersleep and Quebec-born, Hamilton-raised producer Daniel Lanois, who performed the Band's "Moon Struck One."

Robertson actually devoted the first half of his speech to expressing his appreciation for the performances — on Lanois, he remarked: "I knew it when I met him — I knew this guy had something going on" — before offering his appreciation.

"I'm so proud to be here tonight, and I'm so honoured," Robertson said.

"I thank you very, very much."

TORONTO - Après une séparation de près de 20 ans, Céline Dion et Luc Plamondon se retrouvent. Il est en train de lui écrire de nouvelles chansons en vue de son prochain album en français attendu cet automne.

« C’est René Angélil qui m’a joint. Il m’a demandé si je ne pouvais pas écrire de nouvelles chansons pour Céline. Bien sûr, j’ai accepté avec plaisir », a révélé Luc Plamondon, rencontré en fin de semaine à Toronto, lors de son intronisation au Panthéon des auteurs et compositeurs canadiens.

« René et moi, on s’échange des sujets de chansons. J’ai déjà une bonne banque de sujets en tête », a ajouté le célèbre parolier, qui avait été aperçu lors de la première du nouveau spectacle de Céline Dion à Las Vegas.

Le nouvel album en français ne contiendra pas que des chansons de Luc Plamondon. D’autres auteurs québécois — dont Jean-Pierre Ferland — et européens ont été invités à collaborer.

Luc Plamondon assure qu’il n’a jamais été « en chicane » avec le clan Dion-Angélil. On se souviendra qu’après avoir créé les albums Incognito (1987) et Dion chante Plamondon (1992), le parolier québécois s’était vu remplacé par l’auteur français Jean-Jacques Goldman, qui avait créé, en 1995, l’album D’eux, devenu l’album le plus vendu dans toute la francophonie.


Éclipsé
« On a dit que Goldman m’avait piqué Céline... Il devait faire une partie de l’album et moi, l’autre. Finalement, il est arrivé avec 12 chansons, qui ont toutes été retenues; mais bof, c’est du passé. De toute façon, ça m’a permis de faire Notre-Dame de Paris », a raconté l’auteur avec une pointe d’ironie.

Luc Plamondon a déjà composé plusieurs nouvelles chansons pour Céline. « C’est beaucoup de travail; vaut mieux créer une très bonne chanson que cinq moyennes. »


Starmania au cinéma
Plusieurs autres projets majeurs animent le créateur de 69 ans, qui vit principalement en Suisse. Il nous apprend que son projet de porter Starmania au cinéma va bon train, une mégaproduction franco-québécoise de 40 millions $. « J’ai déjà livré le scénario; le producteur et le réalisateur semblent contents. »

« Toute la distribution sera renouvelée. On y retrouvera une distribution internationale », a dit Plamondon en se gardant de dévoiler le moindre nom, pas même celui du réalisateur. Il prévoit que le film sera tourné en 2012 et sortira l’année suivante.


Broadway?
Par ailleurs, le créateur continue de croire que Notre-Dame de Paris débarquera sur Broadway. « Je sais que ça va arriver un jour. Quand on aura fait le tour du monde avec ce show-là, les gens de Broadway vont enfin s’intéresser à nous. »

Enfin, Luc Plamondon, qui se dit en semi-retraite, affirme travailler sérieusement à un autre projet d’envergure qui l’amènera à créer une comédie musicale basée sur l’œuvre de Wagner, ajoutant ses mots qui sonnent à la musique du célèbre compositeur.

Notre-Dame de Paris refusé sur les Plaines

Avec dépit, Luc Plamondon nous apprend que le Festival d’été de Québec a refusé de présenter une version grandiose de Notre-Dame de Paris, cet été, sur les plaines d’Abraham.

« On m’a dit qu’on a refusé pour une question d’argent. Je trouve ça dommage qu’on ne soit pas capable de verser le cachet des Black Eyed Peas pour une production francophone de cette envergure.»

Plamondon aurait souhaité répéter sur les Plaines le même concert que celui présenté en décembre au stade de Moscou, qui ramenait les artistes originaux, dont Bruno Pelletier, Garou et Daniel Lavoie, autour d’un chœur imposant et d’un ensemble symphonique.

« Pour réduire les frais, on aurait pu prendre le Chœur de l’Opéra de Québec et l’Orchestre symphonique de Québec, mais il semble que ça ne marche pas », a déploré Luc Plamondon, qui avait rencontré Daniel Gélinas, directeur général du Festival d’été, lors de son récent passage à Québec pour faire la promotion de son coffret 40e anniversaire.

Les inscriptions pour le Festival de la chanson de Granby

Il ne reste plus que deux semaines pour s’inscrire à la 43e édition du Festival international de la chanson de Granby. Le Festival ouvre ses portes à tous les interprètes, auteurs-compositeurs-interprètes et groupes s’exprimant en français, tous styles confondus. Les jurys qui sélectionneront les 18 demi-finalistes du Québec seront : Gina Brault, Claire Pelletier, Pascal Dufour, Jean-Philippe Fréchette et Richard Pelletier.

C’est du 7 au 17 septembre 2011 que les 24 demi-finalistes qui seront retenus, démontreront tout leur talent dans un Théâtre Palace débordant de fébrilité, en plus de courir la chance de remporter des prix et bourses totalisant plus de 80 000 $; de loin le plus généreux concours au pays.

Les demi-finalistes auront le plaisir de collaborer avec un nouveau directeur musical, Philippe Brault qui est entre autres le chef d’orchestre de Pierre Lapointe. Pour une 4e année, Brigitte Poupart continue son beau travail de directrice artistique et de metteure en scène pour le Festival.

En plus de ses collaborateurs et formateurs de haut niveau, le Festival est heureux de pouvoir compter sur un conseil d’administration composé de professionnels de l’industrie du disque et du spectacle et de gens solidement implantés dans la région de Granby.
