Dracula: la mort vivante

«Une oeuvre étonnamment d'actualité, tourmentée et marquante», écrivions-nous en 2006, quand la comédie musicale québécoise Dracula - Entre l'amour et la mort, produite par Bruno Pelletier, avait pris l'affiche.



Aujourd'hui, après une tournée du Québec triomphale, un réel succès à Lyon (France) et plus de 120 000 spectateurs, Dracula ressurgit, cette fois en format DVD. L'enregistrement a été réalisé par Jean-François Blais en novembre 2006, lors des supplémentaires du spectacle au Théâtre Saint-Denis, devant public. Ce choix de tourner «live» n'est pas sans conséquence: plusieurs scènes sont littéralement sombres (donc, beaucoup de noir dans un écran télé); le son n'est pas toujours transcendant; enfin, les chansons interprétées par un chanteur seul en scène souffrent de la comparaison avec celles qui donnent lieu à des tableaux de groupe. Mais hormis cela, Dracula en DVD vaut le coût et le coup. C'est en effet l'occasion de réaliser à quel point le livret de Richard Ouzounian est d'une grande force dramatique et d'un grand courage (la religion, la sexualité, l'attrait de la mort, tous les sujets tabous ou presque sont abordés!), à quel point les textes de Roger Tabra sont d'une érudition qu'on trouve peu souvent sur nos scènes, à quel point les mélodies et arrangements de Simon Leclerc sont puissants, à quel point les divers chanteurs-comédiens sont habités par leur personnage (en particulier Daniel Boucher) et à quel point ils sont en voix.

En outre, le DVD est la seule occasion d'apprécier la dizaine de très bonnes chansons inédites du spectacle (absentes donc de l'album lancé en 2005, notamment un morceau chanté par Bruno Pelletier intitulé, je crois, «Je suis tous les chagrins vivants» et des chansons interprétées avec une conviction terrifiante par Daniel Boucher). Yeah, I also watch it almost every free minute, and when I'm not at home I listen to its mp3 on my player... can't stop.

Today, after a triumphal round of Quebec, a real success in Lyon (France) and more than 120 000 spectators, Dracula re-appears, this time in format DVD. The recording was carried out by Jean-François Blais in November 2006, at the time of additional of the spectacle to the Saint-Denis Theatre, in front of public. This choice to turn "live" is not without consequence: several scenes are literally dark (thus, much of black in a tele screen); the sound is not always transcendent; finally, the songs interpreted by a singer alone in scene suffer from the comparison with those which give place to tables of group. But except that, Dracula in DVD is worth the cost and the blow. It is indeed the occasion to realize at which point the booklet of Richard Ouzounian is of a great dramatic force and a great courage (the religion, sexuality, the attraction of death, all the subjects taboos or almost are approached!), at which point the texts of Roger Tabra are of a scholarship which one seldom finds on our scenes, at which point the melodies and arrangements of Simon Leclerc are powerful, at which point the various singer-actors are inhabited by their character (in particular Daniel Boucher) and at which point they are in voice. Moreover, the DVD is the only occasion to appreciate ten very good new songs of the spectacle (absent thus of the album launched in 2005, in particular a piece sung by Bruno Pelletier entitled, I believe, "I am all alive sorrows" and of the songs interpreted with a conviction terrifying by Daniel Boucher). I think her complaint about the sound is bogus cuz it's terrific on my system. (Maybe she needs a new media player.) But otherwise it's a great review. I don't think they give 4 stars that often. I love this DVD! Since I was there in the audience at the time it was filmed, I can even tell which portions of certain scenes were recorded on which night.

I don't remember any black screen either...

Maisy, I guess the whole show is rather dark one. I also think it is too much of black colour there. sometimes it's not too convenient to watch.

Well, I also think that the review's author needs a new media player or new speakers, perhaps. I agree that the whole show is not a sunny one but I don't find it too dark either. The show itself and the interpretation of the story are rather unusual, and maybe people expected something else? I don't know. To me the whole show, including all the light effects, is a very harmonic one.

Not a bad idea? Do you imagine Bruno in a fluffy outfit walking around and singing "I'm a cloud, I'm a cloud"? Or saying the famous (at least n Russia): "These are wrong bees, they produce wrong mead", preferrably with his best Draculian voice?
